12th June 2009 - Nighttime part 1

The first seriously busy night with over 300 moths of 73 species. Fifteen were new for the year with two micros needing confirmation by gen.det. To fit in with Blogspot I've split it into two posts - here are the torts.

12th June 2009 - Daytime

This rather beautiful catterpillar is The Mullein which will feed on Buddleia - which is where I found it. I'll try to breed it through and post a photo of the adult if I succeed.

The tiny Lyonetia clerkella was netted at dusk on what turned out to be a very chilly night.

Three new for the year including the first of the awkward Hoplodrina pair - The Rustic and The Uncertain. I'm fairly happy that I've called this correctly as The Rustic but if anyone disagrees, please let me know.

160 moths of 52 species in the MV this morning is the highest single trap count of the year. Five new for the year with two micros and a Noctuid yet to be identified.

7th June 2009

A female Ghost Moth was the only new visitor of the year to the actinic in what was another quiet night. There was also a nice selection of minors which I've had a stab at identifying - they'll be established by gen.det. so I'll correct the identities if that proves necessary.

This moth fits the Waring and Townsend description of Rufous Minor with "bright, conspicuous pale brown oval and kidney-mark":

And this looks good for Tawny Marbled Minor with "coppery central band and no reddish tufts on thorax":
